GENERAL: The greenhouse structure(s)shall be clear span aluminum construction free of interior columns. Quality standard shall be National Series E. Any other manufacturer shall submit to owner (architect)
details of the construction for a approval as equal before consideration can be given to proposal. Widths, lengths, masonry dimensions, and designs shall be according to plans. No masonry and foundation installation
shall be made prior to receipt of approved drawings from BUENA VISTA SUNROOMS, 8274 Quincy Street, Ventura, CA 93004. Dimensions may vary slightly from the contract drawings to suit greenhouse manufacturers
standards, but total area shall be not less than 95 percent of that shown.
SCOPE: This specification covers the furnishing (and installing) of the greenhouse structure, glazing and allied equipment listed, but does not include site preparation, concrete, masonry, plumbing,
electrical power or control, flashing and utility connections.
DRAWINGS: Shop drawings showing complete details shall be submitted by BUENA VISTA SUNROOMS for approval prior to fabrication.
ALLOWABLE STRESSES: Materials are designed to carry the following loads:
- The dead load.
- The live load - 15 lbs. per sq. ft. on the horizontal area.
- Wind load - 20 lbs. per sq. ft. on the vertically projected area. In designing for the above, loads may be considered to act in any of the following combinations:
- Dead load plus live load.
- Dead load plus wind load, plus one-half live load. Aluminum members shall be designed in accordance with current Aluminum Association standards.
SUPERSTRUCTURE: All extruded aluminum members shall be mill finish of alloy 6063-T6 or 6063-T5. Aluminum frame shall be furnished in accordance with the design conditions specified above under
"Allowable Stresses." The framing material is in modular sections with aluminum trusses spanning the full width of the structure, eliminating the need for interior columns. Sidewall height, side
construction, roof and side sash, gable arrangements, and door locations shall be as shown on plans.
GLAZING:
- GLASS- All glass for roof, sides and gables shall be double strength and laid with lapped joints. Glass in sash and doors glass, except in doors, shall be held in place with extruded aluminum bar caps with
sufficiently deep crimp to prevent the glass from slipping. Each cap shall be sufficiently long to cover the entire length of the individual lite without lap. Caps shall be held in place with stainless steel
self-tapping rafter caps to support scaffolding without excess scaffold pressure on caps. Glass shall be bedded on an elastic extruded butyl base puttirope and sealed on top with a bead of gun grade glazing
compound.
- LAMINATED GLASS- Laminated glass units shall consist of two lites of double strength with a .060" interliner for an overall thickness of 5/16". All glass shall be held in place with extruded aluminum
bar caps sufficiently long to cover the entire length of the individual lite without lap. Glass shall be butt glazed and laid without laps and bedded on a minimum 1/8" thick by 1/2" wide preshimmed
butyl tape. Setting block shall be E.P.D.M. 1/8" thick and of sufficient height and length to isolate glass from any contact with aluminum glazing supports. Butted glass shall be separated with 1/4 X 1/4 X
2" setting blocks and edge sealed with clear structural silicone.
- EXOLITE (TM)- Double-skinned clear acrylic sheet (EXOLITE) of approximate 5/8" thickness shall be used to glaze sides, roof and gables. The material shall have a light transmittance of 86 percent as
measured according to ASTM D1003. Sheets shall be continuous from eave to ridge (vent header if sash is furnished) and nominal width of 48". Sheets shall be glazed in special aluminum glazing system.
Glazing bars shall have integrally extruded channels of adequate size to conduct water from condensation or leakage to weep outside without drip. Glazing bars shall provide a minimum bite of 3/4" and
headers shall provide a minimum clearance of 1/8" for every three feet of sheet length. Sheets shall be held in place with continuous aluminum extruded caps with E.P.D.M. gaskets, clamping low enough to
allow unrestricted sheet movement due to expansion and contraction. No point fastening shall be allowed.
- INSULATED GLASS- Insulated glass units shall consist of two lites double strength glass with a 3/8" thick spacer for an overall thickness of 5/8". Spacers shall be desiccant filled with primary seals
of polyisobutylene and secondary seals of silicone. Each lite of glass shall be supported on all four edges and bedded on a minimum 1/8" thick by 1/2" wide preshimmed butyl tape. Setting blocks shall
be E.P.D.M. 1/8" thick and of sufficient height and length to isolate glass units from any contact with the aluminum glazing supports. Glass shall be held in place with extruded aluminum bar caps containing
E.P.D.M. gaskets sufficiently long to cover the individual lite in one piece. After bedding, glass shall be sealed to the glazing supports with one part urethane.
- GLAZING SYSTEM- Only an approved glazing system similar to that shown on plans shall be used. Glazing system shall accommodate a variety of glazing materials, from 1/8" thick glass to 5/8" structured
sheet or 5/8" insulated glass units, to allow for future upgrades in glazing material.
DOORS: Doors shall be standard size 3'-0" X 6'-8" unless otherwise specified. Door frames shall be extruded 1-3/4" X 4" rectangular aluminum tubing. Doors shall be furnished
with standard lock sets, closers, and hinges unless otherwise specified.
CONDENSATION AND EXPANSION: Aluminum members shall have integrally extruded condensation gutters of adequate capacity to collect and carry off condensation. Joint fastenings shall be so designed to permit
expansion and contraction of aluminum members without strain or distortion.
VENTILATION: Roof and side ventilation sash shall be provided as shown on plans. Sash shall be connected with continuously extruded socket type hinges that provide adequate weatherproofing and permit full
opening without possibility of sash unhooking. Roof and side sash apparatus shall be rack and pinion or elbow arm. Each run in each compartment shall be operated individually by either manual or automatic equipment
as specified.
INSTALLATION: Installation shall be made by experienced crews of BUENA VISTA SUNROOMS, or by independent contractors specifically approved in writing by the greenhouse contractor.
